Lumière Tissée/Woven Light: Films by Rose Lowder

From the late 1970’s until present day, Rose Lowder has been immensely prolific as both a filmmaker and as a strong advocate for the presentation and preservation of experimental film in Avignon, France, where she co-founded the Archives du film Expérimental d’Avignon. With a deep understanding of film as a crucial tool for visual research and sensory ecology, the films of Rose Lowder employ a precise structural poetics which fracture and recombine elements of the natural world, while deepening pathways into human perception and our awareness of the fundamental structure of our environments. Originating largely from intricately hand-drawn visual scores which interweave with individual hand-captured frames of film in stunning temporal mosaics, these films underscore a keen attention to our physical connection to the passage of time and its influence on the cycles of nature.

Parcelle (1979)

Composed frame by frame in the camera, Parcelle (fragment, particle or bit) rests upon the alternate appearance and variable duration of tiny colored squares or circles placed on black backgrounds and inserted in series between plain white or colored images. Although the film, filmed frame by frame, may appear conventional on a technical level, this is not the case conceptually as it has been conceived to pin point situations requiring the sense of perception to process images in various time lengths according to the characteristics viewed, a procedure which provokes the experience of optical superimpositions on the screen.

Certaines Observations (1979)

Certaines observations is a two-projector-one-screen piece : the two reels — one B/W (positive) print, one W/B (negative) print –, struck from the same negative, should be projected superimposed on a single screen. If the two projectors are not locked in sync, the projectionist may occasionally stop one of them briefly to try to keep the two pictures in sync. The person projecting may also move one projector slightly, placing the two images side by side momentarily. The two reels should be re-superimposed afterwards.

The film’s title stems from Newton’s Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy where certain observations are used to define notions regarding the appearance of things in true or apparent motion. The material was structured while filming one evening the14th July street celebrations : lights strung across the road, a band, baloons, cars, an ambulance, a horse, fireworks and people dancing on the Pont d’Avignon.

Sources (2012)

Sources originated from Thomas the Gardener’s wish to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his making vegetable pâté. Leaving urban life behind him in order to renew a relationship with the land, Thomas started up an organic garden in the beautiful area of hot and cold Springs, lakes and rivers, in the upper Aude Valley.

In the middle of making his pâté, the gardener is surrounded, as the water sources of the Aude river rush by, by one of the sources for his recipies, the flowers and spices from his garden.

Filmed around the famous circular medieval wash house built on an equally famous spring, the Fosse Dionne, in the medieval town of Tonnerre, Yonne. It is surrounded by wild flowers from abandoned terraces, plants in the St. Pierre gardens, cultivated by the disabled and the injured, which lead up to the church on the hill, flowers hanging down from pots, their reflections and others growing in or around the water’s edges.

Beijing 1988 (1988- 2011)

China seen from Beijing May 1988, a year before the Spring 1989 Tia’nanmen rebellion, where the ancient traditional philosophies and social practices confront the political and economical ideological ambitions of the State.

Just a glimpse of this beautiful spot around the Hôtel – Pension Beau-Site on the Chemin sur Martigny, Switzerland, situated in a hamlet surrounded by snow-capped mountains.

Quiproquo (1992)

Quiproquo is a dialogue on the balance to be found between nature and social-industrial technology. As the film refers to the economy of the means involved in relation to what is expressed, it is both a reflection on the potentialities of the medium and an enquiry concerning the implications of the reality portrayed. It is a question of limits and possibilities, the beauty and tragedy of the world, with a critique of contemporary society’s dominant choices constantly in the background.

Impromptu (1989)

Mounted frame by frame in the camera by rewinding the reel several times during filming, the composition of the film is based on the interweaving of images recorded at two or three different periods of time. The mingling of the mobile forms in each space on the screen represents a particular spatiotemporal experience. Initially a work in progress, Impromptu was not designed to be screened in its present form. At least the film bears up to its title : unplanned distribution, fortuitous sound supplied accidently by the lab, unexpected actors, end an end title produced by chance… Filmed in Fort St. André’s courtyard, Villeneuve-lez-Avignon, Gard, on the way to Carpentras, Vaucluse, near Séderon, Drôme, and in the village of Brantes, Vaucluse.
