I’d seen CCR Headcleaner several times before, usually an entertaining mess of fucked-up rock racket that emerged from the ashes of a Georgia band I liked called Long Legged Woman. But at their Hemlock show opening for Human Eye back in September, CCR somehow transmuted themselves from an unevenly good local band into a marauding gang of Scanners-style head-exploder telepaths and delivered a defining, transcendent, next-level performance. CCR’s hypnotic and malevolent psychedelia wasn’t faux-fun party-psych or disingenuously mellow Zen Center nature psych—it was more of a Jim Thompson’s “Killer Inside Me” psych with elective self-surgery K-hole romps and post hate-fuck cuddle balladry. The band was possessed, the room was juiced, the audience transfixed. At points, CCR’s set was suffused with a prosaic evil vibe that reminded me of the Rembrandt Pussyhorse/Locust Abortion-era Butthole Surfers live shows. Musically, CCR are way different than the Buttholes—I’m referring more to the air of all-pervading cathartic menace. Shortly afterwards, CCR went with Fuzz on a national tour (huge props to Fuzz for that act of public service) and I caught them a month later at Death By Audio in Brooklyn. They were in top road shape, which only underscored how special that show with Human Eye had been. -Anthony Bedard Bay Bridged
Sharmi Basu + Fanciulla Gentile
The Creatrix lore lives deep within the hardware of Fanciulla Gentile, a queer, multidisciplinary/sound artist based in San Francisco. The spirits in the Creatrix machine reveal a posthuman diaspora and the bio-technological connection to the divine matriarch Genetrix. Fanciulla loves walking at dawn or dusk, sci-fi horror and communing. She will be self-publishing the first part of The Creatrix story in 2017.
BEAST NEST is Sharmi’s primary performing project. She utilizes an unwavering depression & restrained horror to channel left-eyed spirits. While simultaneously clearing and entering, the sewage pipes of the body and the patriarchy congeal into watery soundscapes as a vehicle for achieving liberation through the darkest of fears.
San Francisco’s Derek Gedalecia’s long-standing Headboggle moniker has boasted over one hundred releases in his twenty-plus years composing and releasing music that spans from dense layered modern electronics, sputtering noise, modular and Buchla-based synthesizer works, and avant-neoclassical to giddy electronics and even ragtime piano. But none of these releases have fully purged the deepest depths of unexplored sonic territories with the inspired urgency and strategic extraction of unheard electronic compositions as his newest record, Polyphonic Demo, to be released on CD and digital on April 22. On Polyphonic Demo, Gedalecia abandons all notions of what experimental music is supposed to sound like to offer a tense, exuberant, and refreshingly idiosyncratic take on synthesizer music. With forty-four one-minute tracks that are meant to be shuffled on CD or remain in their sequenced order, Gedalecia completely reimagines what is possible both compositionally and spatially within the confines of a sixty-second track, or an album for that matter. Gedalecia constructs poignant, cinematic vignettes which offer a glimpse into dense, psychedelic zones. Polyphonic Demo is the listening adventure of abstract yet masterfully grounded electronic music we’ve all been waiting for.”

Malocculsion is a sound, visual, and performance artist currently based in Oakland,CA, exploring relationships of sound, the body and the exterior space in which they exist, psychosis, mortality, the prison system and the omnipresent entropic trap door of life. Also performs in multimedia performance projects Coral Remains (fka Styrofoam Sanchez) and False/None, synths in Cyborg Eye, and OSC and curates the Ratskin Records imprint (Since 2005) and is a curator In residence at Pro Arts in Oakland, CA. Malocculsion has LP and CD releases forthcoming on Love Earth Music, and Ratskin.
