At 1pm on Thursday, May 10th, Diana will be joined in performance by movement artist Benjie Lasseau and musician Stuart Rabinowitsh. This event will utilize both the interior and exterior spaces of the installation. At other random times during the 5-week duration of the show, Ms. Marto will continue to alter the installation by adding new drawing elements. Those interested can stop by after the initial performance to see what has changed and experience the work as it unfolds.
This production is Part Two of Marto’s Jaguars and Angels-Canto XXVI. Part One took place last April at the Midway Gallery in San Francisco, in conjunction with “100 Days of Action in the Bay Area” where her audience became the chorus as Ms. Marto read the full page list of Truths published in the New York Times while standing on a soap box. At the end of the performance, audience members were encouraged to step onto the soapbox to declare their own Truths.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Diana Marto’s multi-faceted career in performance and visual art spans 4 continents. Her site-specific performances have received media coverage in Hong Kong, Turkey, and Northern California. Her visual art has been exhibited in the Bay Area, Big Sur, Santa Fe, Istanbul, Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong. Marto’s passion for paper was ignited while living in Japan and Hong Kong in the late seventies to mid-eighties, where she began the Canto Series, an epic spirit play with paper and dance. The Cantos are site specific performances with installations of related works on paper. Her first Canto was in response to the Hong Kong Housing Authority bashing in her studio with sledgehammers and crowbars in 1982. She has also performed for Muslim women who live close to Catal Hoyuck, Turkey – a Neolithic archaeological site where evidence of worship of the feminine was found; with her handmade-paper life-sized whale bones for inner city kids in Richmond, California; and at District Six in Cape Town, South Africa, a township which was bulldozed during Apartheid.
