Curated by Chris Wood, one of our Curators-in-Residence, this event features the talents of local artist, Alexander Brown, as Pander (music) and with Earth Dance Mafia, plus Maya Songbird and Talisman
Earth Dance Mafia
Earth Dance Mafia is an experimental dance collective based out of Oakland since 2015. EDM creates improv performances on subjects such as the metaphysical or political, but mainly it’s about connecting on other levels with each other in our human experience, we believe in the meditation in movement deeply.
Meet Maya Songbird, the next electric superstar. Songbird mixes Disco, Electro, Pop, and Funk to make her own out of this world sound influenced by being raised in the colorful and historic Castro District in SF. Themes of liberation, self-love, feminism, and empowerment permeate the artist’s extensive and diverse discography. Songbird knew at an early age she was different. Growing up in the Castro helped her understand that she was liberated even if the rest of the world beyond her beloved home was not, and she lived her life outside of the box, longing to share her inner rainbow with the world. Singing since the age of four and writing her first full song at the age of 12, she knew she would create her own stardom through her art.
Queer industrial pop music presented in the form of performance art involving experimental dance ft. Earth dance Mafia. Singer songwriter Pander met Producer Serge Kalvini flipping burgers at a dead end job in Berkeley Ca and hated everything and everyone but not each other. one day Serge was like “your a great singer, I make a bit of music do you want to listen to a track I just finished” then Pander was “duh, yeah new best work friend” The track plays and then Pander was like ” we should work on something together, and that shit hella happen. Long story short
For the past seven years, I’ve been operating according to a biblical verse beginning at Ephesians: Chapter Six, verse Twelve. “For we wrestle not with flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take into you the Whole Armour of God that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all to stand.” This acknowledgement of spiritual warfare is expressed in all my art. And now, to finally explore it from a sonic odyssey perspective is a challenge and an adventure.
