Having lived, worked and studied in Japan for seven years, Diane Abt's work reflects the Japanese aesthetic of line, balance and emptiness. The artist combines the elegance of Asian calligraphy with unconventional mark-making inspired by the stuff of everyday life: from kitchen junk found in thrift shops to nature's refuse gathered during morning walks in the woods. This juxtaposition of ancient brush writing and the mysteriously beautiful design embedded in ordinary objects is a central element in Abt's work. "I'm intrigued by the marvel of making from the common the uncommon," Abt said.

Diane Abt worked for more than 35 years as a journalist before making art her full-time endeavor. She was born in Chicago, and received her B.A. from the University of Illinois. Her artwork has been exhibited in Tokyo, San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley. The artist now lives in Oakland, California.

The exhibition is on view weekdays from 9 am til 5 pm in the Latham Square lobby located at 1611 Telegraph Ave., Oakland. Admission is free.
