2 x 2 Solos is a series of solo exhibitions featuring new work commissioned from four accomplished emerging artists based in the Oakland/Bay Area. The program recognizes artistic excellence and supports the freedom to create challenging and noncommercial work.
2 x 2 Solos: Wafaa Yasin brings together two evolving projects that began as site-specific video performances: We All Belong to the Same Line (2011/2012) and Let's say that this was a Mountain (2012). The locations in Yasin's works act as dual referents, shifting from the San Francisco Bay to the Mediterranean Sea and Galilean Hills. Yasin's body is at the crux of these works, as a site of contestation and struggle, which she uses to explore the relationship between politics, place, and identity.
About the Artist: Wafaa Yasin was born in Galilee, Palestine. From 2004 to 2008, she was awarded artist residencies in Italy, France, Turkey, and Germany, and was the recipient of Murphy Cadagan Fellowship in 2009. Yasin completed a MFA in Social Practice at California College of the Arts on full scholarship in 2010. She has participated in exhibitions at Irvine Contemporary Gallery, Washington D.C. and Thessaloniki Biennial Performance Art Festival, Greece. In the Bay Area, her video and performance work has been featured at Southern Exposure, Contemporary Jewish Art Museum, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Performance Art Institute, and Krowswork Gallery. '2 x 2 Solos' at Pro Arts is her first solo exhibition.
About the Curator: Lauren Schell Dickens' curatorial projects include Peter Forgacs' 'The Danube Exodus' exhibition at the Jewish Museum, 'A Conflicted State' at the ISE Cultural Foundation, NY, 'There is no synonym for hope' at SmackMellon, Brooklyn, and 'At Arms Length' at Nurture Art, Brooklyn. Lauren is curatorial advisor for the Kunsthalle Galapagos collective in Brooklyn, and has previously held curatorial posts at the Jewish Museum in New York, Guggenheim Museum, and Dallas Museum of Art, and managed the Robert Koch Gallery in San Francisco. Lauren is currently the Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. She holds a BA in American Studies from Yale University and an MA in Modern Art: Critical Studies from Columbia University.

2 x 2 Solos:
2 x 2 Solos provides a platform for cutting-edge, risk-taking art and situates artists in a critical contemporary art context. Supported, in part, by the National Endowment for the Arts, California Arts Council, and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, 2 x 2 Solos engages multiple layers of the region's arts ecology by providing institutional and monetary support for artists, curators, and writers in the Oakland/Bay Area. Participation in the program is based on nomination by the top arts professionals in the Oakland / Greater Bay Area. From over 100 nominations, 4 artists are selected based on review by a curatorial panel and studio visits with independent curators.
